a Climate of Trust is Sylvain Baumann’s first exhibition project in Berlin. Working in a variety of different media including sculpture, found objects as well as design items, photography, drawing, audio recordings, and text, Baumann arranges spatial installations that provoke questions about the design and shape of contemporary architecture. Baumann understands architectural design to be a political and ideological means of contemporary society and is interested in the motivations, ideas and mechanisms that produce this society: How does our physical environment – private and public – inform and transform us as individuals, our habits, our perception and experience, our ways of thinking and our desires, and how we form relationships with others. Rather than focussing on an analysis of human behaviour, Baumann sees his installations as an analysis of and a comment on the work of contemporary architects, urban and interior designers which aims at the development and elaboration of the ‘world of tomorrow’. In his exhibition project at Centrum Sylvain Baumann is specifically interested in the idea that we currently live in what the artist calls a Climate of Trust. Baumann claims that in the more and more complex, multi-layered and mediated world of today, it is no longer […]

Michal Glikson has been exploring peripatetic art practice with a focus on painting as a means of negotiating cross-cultural experience and the uncertainty of transitional life since 2006. “I have long been fascinated with painting as a way of looking at the world, of reaching out to and connecting with others. My work springs from a deep curiosity about travel and its capacity for bringing me into the world, and placing me in proximity to its pressing issues and concerns.” The Australindopak Archive is a trilogy of scroll paintings that chronicle immersive journeys in Australia, India and Pakistan between 2012 and 2015. The paintings allow a window into a lived experiences of peripatetic life filled with encounters with extra/ordinary people.

The starting point for these works is the landscape, not as a literal representation, but instead focusing on the emotive qualities of place. Using an objective palette tied to his family’s home in the Scottish highlands, colour acts as a vehicle to reveal the picture planes underlying points of reference; with the structure, design, and colour harmony being grounded in the everyday, the viewer is encouraged to readdress notions of their surroundings, where the familiar is opened up and made full of possibility. Daniel F. Herrmann, Eisler Curator & Head of Curatorial Studies at Whitechapel Gallery, London (UK) describes Eric Cruikshank’s work approach as “…analysing the qualities of colour and light. Instead of imitating landscapes, it explores notions of painterly space. And instead of illustrating stories, it investigates the process of painting itself.” and “With its focus on the chromatic qualities and the process […]

Second Liquid State A collaboration by Mariko Hori (Japan/Serbia), Petra Hudcova (Czech Republic) and Eeva-Liisa Puhakka (Finland) 9th of September 7pm >top Schillerpalais, Schillerpromenade 4, 12049 Berlin-Neukölln www.top-ev.de Second Liquid State encompasses new works examining different aspects of biodiversity. Concerns for the ecological and the poetic are knitted together in the setting of the gallery space. The show combines three different approaches. Hori studies the definition of a river and water and its borders, beginnings and ends. From where to where can we call a river a river? Can we separate it from the environment? Hudcova’s works are a response to her mediation on the theme of nature within urban context and her questioning of the political role of wasteland spaces in current city development. Puhakka’s installation meditates the impact of climate change within the context of water and is a comment on our current environmental crisis. Second liquid state plays with the secret and beauty of water and hints at the recent physical discoveries that water has 4 states instead of 3. Physicians found out that liquid water has a second liquid state. We all believed that there is 3 basic states: solid, liquid and gas but now scientists […]
Attokoussy الطقوسي workshop, conferenz 8. – 17. September 2017 in Marrakech/Morocco exhibition, discussion 19.-23. September 2017 at LeCube in Rabat/Morocco exhibition 15. November 2017 at hinterland in Vienna/Austria a project by Elisabeth Piskernik, Le Cube / Rabat “Attokoussy” is an art and collective research project that opens a space of reflection and expression on rites and superstitions in Morocco. In this context we want to invite four Moroccan artists to reflect together on these issues within the framework of a research and production residency. The project also foresees a collaboration with two Kurdish artists, in order to emerge from a construction of European-centered knowledge, to incite everyone to decenter his point of view and to shift preconceived ideas that continue to nourish archaic discourses. The period of residence will be enriched by meetings and round tables between artists, researchers and anthropologists of the Maghreb focusing their research on these themes. In partnership with the Centre Jacques Berque we will also organize a public study day reactivating this forgotten, invisible or folklorized intangible cultural heritage. Saturday, 16th of September, 9pm at >top Schillerpalais, Schillerpromenade 4, 12059 Berlin For the book release there will be a short presentation of the AIM network. Several Artists and Initiatives of the network will attend and celebrate at this unique evening at >top Schillerpalais. The AIM Network is a publication about the AIM Network, a diverse network of European artists’ initiatives and their exchange of knowledge and experiences over a period of six years. The members got to know each other at Supermarket, an international art fair for artist-run spaces held annually in Stockholm, and continued meeting in different cities in and out of Europe to discuss key issues of self-organised exhibition spaces. They also engaged in an idea of developing an online Artist-Run Map that would gather artist-run initiatives to enhance their visibility and provide space for artistic exchange. There can be found many examples of attempts to create a similar map, but they have all failed, being either incomplete or becoming fast outdated. AIM have discussed the problematics surrounding this project, identified the main obstacles and developed a number of conceivable solutions, but as of now have not gathered the resources to perfect and launch a functioning Artist-Run […]

“I mostly work with drawings and photographs, but also with slow image recording processes that might be generally termed heliography. These are processes tying the act of leaving traces to the recording of materials’ deterioration caused by sunlight exposure. …………… One of the first techniques I tried was developing surfaces drawn in ball-point pen in the sunlight. After a few trials, I noticed that blue ball-point pen works like a photosensitive emulsion. And this was the most straightforward link between drawing and photography. Basically, each photograph set was equally a drawing. …………….. On the back of each such photograph I write the exposure time. It may vary from one week in the summer, to one month in the winter. Waiting time has become, through this process, a time to reflect and prepare other images for development“, Răzvan Anton.

Select these vertices so that their points of origin encompass three different continents. Collapse the scale so that all three fit within the same few rooms in Berlin, and make this space confirm to David Hilbert’s concept allowing endless possibilities of multidimensional calculations. Permit collaboration, but without insisting on it. Will the positions conform, converge, simply co-exist, or even collide? What will be the measurable outcome? The initiating spark for me wanting to set this experiment up, was the news that Korean artist Soyoung Chung would spend a few months in Europe, first at a research residency at Delfina Foundation in London, then producing new work at the Z/KU here in Berlin. Knowing Soyoung’s work from a residency in Ireland more than a decade ago, it has since positively fascinated me. The opportunity of engaging her for a show at our project space HilbertRaum, now that she was finally back in Europe, was […]

[ A Bomb is an explosive weapon that uses the exothermic reaction of an explosive material to provide an extremely sudden and violent release of energy. ] [ A nuclear bomb is an explosive device that derives its destructive force from nuclear reactions, either fission or from a combination of fission and fusion reactions. It is a weapon of mass destruction.] There was no more treathening menace for mankind during the 20th century than an man made catastrophy by massive use of nuclear weapons. This threat is build and symbolized by one singular term: „the nuclear bomb“, or simply „the bomb“. During the cold war the military escalation between the Soviet Union and the U.S. lead us several times towards the edge of an atomic war, which surely means the end of zivilisation and very probably also the end of mankind.

“How might we expose the fundamental structures and dominant values of work, including its temporalities, socialities, hierarchies, and subjectivities as pressing political phenomena? If why we work, where we work, with whom we work, what we do at work, and how long we work are social arrangements and hence properly political decisions, how might more of this territory be reclaimed as viable terrains of debate and struggle?” –The Problem with Work, Kathi Weeks New Poetics of Labor aims to create opportunities for artists/workers to have a dialogue through experimental exhibitions in spaces where production takes place. Through art we learn about labor and there is a way that through labor we can also redefine art. When the languages of artists and workers are examined under the same lens a common ground is exposed, and the absurdities of a tired structure translate into people’s readiness for resistance. At New Poetics of Labor we are asking ourselves: -What examining labor might mean for resistance, especially in developing countries? -What reflecting on this reality as a worker might mean for the artist, and similarly, what thinking of himself as an artist might mean for a waged worker? We are inviting artists and writers […]
“In these times, it’s become increasingly hard for artists to find a place to take risks, a safe haven where they can develop daring new work. One theatre has regularly bucked the trend, making its mission to ensure that artists have a home for their R&D, and that theatregoers can sample the exciting results.” – OBIE Committee, Ross Wetzsteon Award to HERE HERE is thrilled to announce the opening of the annual application period for the HERE Artist Residency Program (HARP). One of the most robust residency programs of this nature in the country and serving as a national model, HARP provides a commission, development support, career planning, and a full production to hybrid artists, all within a collaborative environment of peers working across disparate art forms – including theatre, dance, music, puppetry, visual art, and new media. HARP provides significant long-term support, as well as $50,000 in cash and $50,000 in space, equipment and services over 2-3 years to tailor each residency to each artist’s individual needs. Through significant investment of time and resources, dynamic work within a strong community is created. The exhibition includes three installations created by Gidi Gilam, Noa Ginzburg and Anat Martkovich, and offers a playful and experimental approach to the process of artistic creation, as well as to the gallery space. Gilam, Ginzburg and Martkovich each take an interest in the way in which a sketch can be interpreted and moved between different mediums through translations of the artistic, physical, and the picturesque space, and the examination of the forces and conventions that drive the artistic world.
The cooperative Alfred Gallery decided to dedicate the year 2018 to the theme of “Vision and Failure”. By dealing with the chosen subject, Alfred Gallery seeks to expand the field of meanings that are embedded between the words: vision, success, failure, intent and improvisation, and to raise questions about the factors that define these concepts, and to break up centers of power.
Alfred Gallery invites artists from various fields to offer an ongoing collaboration with the audience that will take place over a week during August 2018.
Idris is starting the new year with a new exhibit! We welcome you to join us for the opening of the exhibition “Motion Trap” by Michael Halak and Samah Shihadi. Thursday 11 January at 20:00 In this exhibit the artists deal with the notions of movement and transition. Shihadi’s works convey the physical entrapments of a traditional and patriarchal society, which she expresses through the movements of a female dancer. Halak’s work reflect the relation between individuals and physical locations, via the imagery and memories connected to a modern nomad. Both artists bring the issue of movement to the forefront only to find themselves entrapped: on the one hand dance which is perceived as a freeing act transforms into an illusion only persistent so long as action is taking place, and the modern nomad who is on a continuous move lacks belonging and finds himself in constant uncertainty whereby what is meant to be a temporary condition into a permanent state of affairs. The Artists Michael Halak: born in 1975 in Fassuta village (Upper Galilee). After studying Fine Arts at Haifa University, Halak won a residence scholarship in 2005 to attend the Florence Academy of Art. He received a MFA […]

Ed Ruscha’s Hollywood Boulevard on Hollywood Boulevard Iconic Los Angeles artist Ed Ruscha photographed iconic Los Angeles streets beginning in the 1960s. By mounting a camera to a moving car, Ruscha documented sequential storefronts on the north side of Hollywood Boulevard between McCadden Place and Hudson Avenue, and on the south side of the street between Wilcox Avenue and McCadden Place. The images in the top black and white “filmstrip” show what the Boulevard looked like in 1973, and the bottom one in color documents the same locations in 2002. The building that LACE has occupied since 1994 at 6522 Hollywood Boulevard on the south side appears in this work. LACE was founded in Downtown Los Angeles at 240 S. Broadway and then moved to 1804 Industrial Street before its long-time tenure on Hollywood Blvd. The organization celebrates its 40th Anniversary as the longest-running contemporary artists space in Los Angeles. LACE has been located on Hollywood Boulevard for 24 years and is exhibiting this artwork in its window on Hollywood Boulevard 24 hours a day through the end of 2018. Thanks to Ed Ruscha, and our friends at the Ed Ruscha studio and the Getty Research Institute for this loan. This video is part of Pacific […]
The Contours Of a Liminal Mind is an exhibition that focuses on the threshold between colliding cultures – the liminal space- which lets something new and unknowingly arise and open up for negotiation of meanings and representations.
The Archival Impulse: 40 Years at LACE Curated by Matias Viegener with Exhibition Design by Jeff Cain Opening Reception: March 15, 2018, 7-10 PM On view:March 16 – 2018 The Archival Impulse: 40 Years at LACE is a Project Room installation that pulls from material found in LACE’s archive that either highlights or disputes our conceptions of LACE’s history. Accumulated over 40 years, it has no organizing system beyond what LACE staff considered worth saving. It enfolds many stories about the space, less woven than overlaid and amassed. This exhibition is a conversation about our expectations of the archive and the things we expect to find, contrasted against the material that does find its way in. This is particularly poignant in the case of an archive that accumulates rather than is curated over time, yielding space for a kind of counter-curation. Includes video works curated by Anne Bray featuring: Reza Abdoh, Skip Arnold, Fu-Ding Cheng, Jeanne Finley, Doug Henry, Cheng-Sim Lim, Susan Mogul, Eric Saks, Jim Shaw, and more. Archives are always bigger than us, bigger than the image we have of them, more than we can take in. Archives cannot be summarized nor adequately represented. Optimally, archives never end: everything is archivable, though not everything enters the archive, and unexpected and decontextualized things appear regularly. […]
While life in the surrounding city of Berlin is hectic and fast-paced the performance project A Room for Oneself by Irene Accardo and Heini Nukari at Centrum is a means to decelerate and retreat. The performance was developed by the two artists in order to create a space for inner observation and relaxation. A Room for Onself is thus intended as a gift and offer from the performers to the visitors. In the former red light district of Neukölln, instead of paid erotic services, Accardo and Nukari offer a gesture of love and art as a spiritual experience.
Leere Sockel / Entfernte Monumente (empty pedestals /removed monuments) Video, Fotografie, Installation Duration: 23th March – 15th April 2018 Artists: Tina Griffith, János Brückner, Nicole Marc, Constanza Rossi, Gözde Güngör, Marlene Bart, Marisa Benjamin Initiator: Dr. Lisa Glauer a cooperation project between: Institut für Kunst im Kontext / Universität der Künste Berlin Charité Mitte von Berlin ———————————————— Opening Times: thursday – sunday 3-7 pm ———————————————— The Organ of Critical Arts is presenting work developed within the des Seminar Empty Pedestals, Removed Monuments at the Institute for Art in Context of the University of the Arts, Berlin. Tina Griffith, János Brückner, Nicole Marc, Constanza Rossi, Marlene Bart, Marisa Benjamin snd Gözde Güngör worked on the theme of removed monuments that can be found all over memory landscapes and cultural geographies. Often the desire is voiced to mark these changes, to comment on them or to make them visible, or with a sort of copy paste, to reverse the removal. The artists explore what extended and possibly entirely different possibilities might exist, to react to the empty pedestals, beyond the desire, to imagine wholeness where it has been disrupted. How can these other, new, expanded and possibly less monumental ideas me communicated? […]

ITSLIQUID GROUP is proud to announce the CALL FOR ARTISTS for SURFACES FESTIVAL, that will be presented in Venice from 26-27th May 2018 to 25th November 2018 at THE ROOM Contemporary Art Space, Palazzo Ca’ Zanardi and other prestigious venues and historical buildings, during the same period of the BIENNALE ARCHITETTURA 2018 – 16th International Architecture Exhibition. SURFACES FESTIVAL consists of 3 main exhibitions focused on different themes: BODIES (May 26 – July 12, 2018), PLACES (July 27 – September 13, 2018), and SPACES (September 28 – November 25, 2018); an Experimental division dedicated to video-art and performing art and the Venice Architecture Academy. The festival analyzes the idea of human and urban places, how people live them and how they are modified in contemporary society. Every human being lives in a world in which surfaces shape their attitudes and behaviors, limiting freedom and creating a sense of alienation. The man reacts breaking the limits and finding a new way of life. We imagine a world of “liquid bodies and cities“, where differences create new possibilities, developing new structures, phisical, intellectual and spiritual. The festival aims to analyze the relationship between body and space in contemporary time. More info: http://www.itsliquid.com/call-surfaces-venice-may-nov-2018.html […]

The archive serves her as material, is both a resource and an aesthetic reference and often forms the starting point for the artistic interventions of Selma Weber. Two archives have been created for the solo exhibition in Bonn. Archive I contains objects, Archive II photographic images. These two archives form the starting point and quarry of the installative and space-related exhibition. SFSIA | Berlin, titled “Art and the Poetics of Praxis in Cognitive Capitalism”, will engage with critical concerns of past programs —estrangement, individuation, and collectivity— in order to consider the performative power of poetry. Through deep readings, workshops, and lectures, we will strive to discover new words, meanings, and rhythms of resistance and reconstruction.
As a small child, Sunday morning meant cartoons. It was a religious experience which couldn’t be missed. There wasn’t a crueler punishment than the ban on watching cartoons. But the times soon changed, and we could watch cartoons almost anytime, having discovered the existence of dedicated TV channels that broadcasted cartoons only. My infatuation would eventually transform into boredom in this new realm of plenitude. And then slowly I stopped watching cartoons altogether. Almost. -Ana Botezatu Ana Botezatu’s first solo exhibition in Cluj reminds us that being a so-called adult doesn’t mean to only be doing the things we are supposed and expected to do. It is not a call to arms in a revolution against normativity, but rather a gentle whisper that tells us not to forget the curiosity, the fascination, the blissful joy and even the sadness and frights of being a child. Ana Botezatu, b. 1982, lives and works in Berlin. Working with different mediums, from ceramics to embroidery, from toys to collage, from food to found objects, her works follow a thorough process of naturalization until completely blended with her own world. With a special care for all symbols, patterns, plants and creatures, profoundly and sensitively […]

Opening reception for Bold Visual Language by Emory Douglas. 2-4pm Emory Douglas Conversation 4-6pm Reception Bold Visual Language: Emory Douglas considers the legacy and diasporic impact of the visual artist Emory Douglas. Having served as the Minister of Culture of the Black Panther Party and the graphic artist of the Black Panther Party Newspaper Emory Douglas’s vision of black radical politics as a set of aesthetic concerns graphed a grammar of global struggle. Douglas imaging of anti-black police brutality and economic/housing discrimination was interlaced with American Imperialist projects and Anti colonist struggles happening globally. The enhancement and saturation of vibrant colors, figurative refusal, kinship and border crossing visions of justice are the dialectics of possibility. The immediacy of global terror was a call to resistance by everyday folks who were depicted as active icons in the project for liberation. Bold Visual Language locates these initial concerns of Douglas in a contemporary discourse amongst visual artist and current social movements. This exhibition features Black Panther Party Newspaper’s, Historical from Southern California Library and re-mixed images of posters by Emory Douglas, works by Sadie Barnette, Patrick Martinez, and Caleb Duarte in collaboration with Zapatista community women and Douglas. Public programming includes a conversation with Emory […]

The purpose of the meeting is to build an exhibition. That sounds rather obvious, but the question why and how we build an exhibition has to be asked over and over again.

Camila Galaz “He pleaded so much that he lost his voice. His bones began to fill with words.” Gabriel García Márquez, One Hundred Years of Solitude. Reparar Means To Repair uses video and gesture to explore intergenerational rifts created by mass violence and the attempts to mend damage done – both governmental reparations and personal acts of repair and remembering. The exhibition looks at the relationship between official narratives of reparation and the burden of personal healing through the frame of language and memory. Camila Galaz lives and works in Melbourne, where she completed Honours in Fine Art in 2012. In her painting and video-based practice, she explores the role of performance and memory in the construction of identity. She also works collaboratively with the art collective TBP. Gerard Crewdson For SOUND SERIES 2018, Gerard Crewdson presents site-specific acoustic sound sculptures. The centrepiece of the exhibition is a natural horn, nearly 5 metres long, made from a single hollow tube (like a didgeridoo) and played with a mouthpiece (like a Swiss alphorn). The horn resembles a ‘serpent’ – not only the creature – but also the instrument of that name which was the predecessor of the modern-day tuba. Low brass instruments have traditionally been associated with raising the voices of the dead in both Western and non-Western cultures. These are the ‘serpent songs’ of the title but also the ‘windshadows’ – a compound word taken from a Paul Celan poem, Weiss Und Leicht / White and Light. This might be read as a wind of shades, of ghosts, blowing over the genocidal landscape of post WWII Europe. BLINDSIDE stands upon stolen, never ceded Wurundjeri land – a genocidal landscape with its own wind of shades, of ghosts, of voices lost or never heard. Crewdson’s other sound sculptures – a ‘Rice Wheel’ and ‘Galileo Drum’ – generate sound through gravity-produced falling motion, thereby also acknowledging the Wurundjeri ground upon which the gallery and surrounding city, stand. Exhibition opening Friday, June 22, 2018, 6–9pm Open June 23 & 24th 2018, 12-6pm ”Nothing and nobody exists in this world whose very being does not presuppose a spectator.” – Hannah Arendt, The Life of the Mind, 1973 As part of the 48 Stunden Neukölln Festival, 2018, SomoS Art House, Berlin, presents an exhibition by a selection of artists who reflect on authenticity, subjective reality, behavioral patterns and performativity of the self. In our professional environment, on the internet, within gender and family roles, as artists, it can be said that our being is always layered with often highly coded performative elements. The tension between inner being and public persona is described by Jorge Luis Borges as a sharp divide, while in Hannah Arendt’s view, “nothing and nobody exists in this world whose very being does not presuppose a spectator.” Arendt’s view seems fitting in a time where, for better or worse, our public behavior is constantly under close scrutiny. Enabled by rapidly changing technologies, it is measured, and influenced by outside factors. Governmental, political and commercial monitoring and psychological profiling are all pervasive. The interest in our genuine private selves behind the public persona is enormous. At the same […]
Familiar Signals is the title of an installation of sound and text works by Sybella Perry made together with her father and her sister, over a period of nine months whilst coming to terms with a traumatic accident that affected the family. The works draw on sounding and listening as a means to create and share spaces of intimacy and inter-subjectivity. The artist uses tonality to contrast familiar occurrences and unexpected events, both in music and in everyday encounters.
Opening Reception & Performance; June 26th 2018, 6-9pm Performance begins at 8pm Duration: June 27- 30 2018, daily 2-7pm SomoS Art House Berlin is proud to present a multimedia installation from Iranian-Canadian artist Anahita Norouzi titled “de- + patterned: a space in-between,” taking place June 27-30th 2018. In this presentation, the artist draws from her own personal archive of memories, texts, and family stories to revisit and at times revise the historical events surrounding the Iranian Revolution and the unlawful incarcerations that occurred both before and after regime change. Text, images, video, and objects are interwoven to create an unstable narrative to be decoded by the viewer and which will be elaborated upon during a performance by the artist on the opening night. Likening the institutionalized suppression of history with the internalized process of memory repression, Norouzi uses the power of her own writing on the events from her family history and the power of photographs to invoke memory. She juxtaposes objectivity in the form of factual accounting of events and geography with the speculative and counterfactual recounting of secondhand information passed down from her father. The imperfection and ambiguity of memory is both an effect of the traumatic relationship […]

Black and White (and Red All Over): Part 3 Exhibition in Toolbox and OKK from the 29th of June until the 15th of July 2018 This exhibition, Black and White (and Red All Over) is now the third version of an exhibition first held at The Bogart Salon in 2013, then at ArtHelix Gallery in 2016. It was then expanded to travel to Galleria Huuto in Helsinki, Finland and now makes its next stop in Berlin at Organ kritischer Kunst (Organ of critical Arts). The title of the exhibition is based on the old joke of “What’s black and white and re(a)d all over?…a newspaper.” The idea is that while the works here have no actual formal connection they are, nonetheless all black and white…and can, and should be “read all over”. It’ also a way of re-thinking the “curated” exhibition -which usually relies on formal similarities- as a text or newspaper with each “article” or art work as separate entities to be read by themselves, and only held together by the concept of the black and whiteness of the newspaper itself. The show is then like a newspaper, full of content, with many different artists all addressing a […]

As a traditionally white and male institution, the frat holds a powerful weight of race and gender, asserting the continuation of racial and hetero-normative lifestyles into a future that has never been more ambiguous on these fronts. Increasing tension and violence around fraternity and sorority houses over the past two years suggest an intensification of cultural and ideological performance in response to shifting sexual and racial paradigms. Consider the suspension of fraternity activity on both the CalPoly and Texas State campuses following instances of racism and death, both this year. These are only two instances of what seems like constant issues that are particularly alcohol/drug related, sex/gender/body related, or race related. From Animal House to Old School, we are asked to condone the youthful exploits of men. Neighbors 2 complicated the landscape only minimally by collaging the visual and behavioral attributes of frat boys onto the bodies of female actresses. Heavy Fingering addresses the frat as a site of extreme action, extreme performance, and extreme power in the psyche of Americans of any gender, whether as fear or as self-validating energy. Rarely has this site been addressed in an art context, where populations tend to organize themselves in resistance to […]

And welcome aboard Return Flight MEL>CHC: a multidisciplinary, trans-Tasman trip from Melbourne to Christchurch, and back again. For our second edition, Return Flight asked ten artists from Melbourne and New Zealand to create works that commented on the theme of ‘home’. We then paired each artwork with a writer from the opposite place and asked them to respond. Writers could engage with the artworks however they liked, but we didn’t let them off that easy: artists’ identities were withheld until the very end. Afterwards, we sat our artists down for a Skype call with their assigned writers to discuss the collaborative process. You’ll find the transcripts of these conversations in the print edition of Return Flight: MEL>CHC, and you’ll see and hear them at our Melbourne and Christchurch launches. Curated by Elizaveta Maltseva, edited by Megan Anderson and designed by Jacqui Hagen, Return Flight features works and interviews by Drew Pettifer, TextaQueen, Sean M. Whelan and Selina Tusitala Marsh, which […]

Following the success of our first Not A Thing show, the Con Artist Collective is proud to present Not A Thing II because form is still overrated! In this follow up show pure abstraction reigns supreme as we explore the indefinable. Let’s get abstract and downright expressive in this show of abstraction! “I’m not an abstractionist. I’m not interested in the relationship of color or form or anything else. I’m interested only in expressing basic human emotions: tragedy, ecstasy, doom, and so on.” ― Mark Rothko Flyer Artwork by Moody Marinaro

What would happen if the ground was up? What if we were grounded from above? A possible answer might be levitation, where gravity still holds but in another way; something between the free-floating flux of total freedom in generic abstraction and the pull of gravity in realism of matter. Such balancing acts were performed through a variety of elements in Martin Blake’s previous paintings. Using pieces of torn paper on canvas as part of the composition created points of gravity within the rectangular space, a limitation that opened up a space for dialog. Another method used by the artist is wide brush strokes: between the largely empty white background of the canvas and thin lines of colour that have to obey the defined laws of matter and motion, a space opens up for a play of fore- and background, for a temporary balancing of the mythical and the human, for the risky practice of making transient acts permanent in matter and static pigments transient in movement, for what is called “painting”. In his latest project at Centrum, Martin Blake achieves a similar balance using an altogether new and different method in which the frame itself sets the limits. The shape […]

How do you view the world through the camera lens or screen? How does digital media influence our interactions in real life? Is this real life or a computer simulation? In this showcase, our artists are welcomed to play with all forms of digital media. Come experience digital media IRL! “The digital revolution is far more significant than the invention of writing or even of printing.” – Douglas Engelbart “The digital camera is a great invention because it allows us to reminisce. Instantly.” – Demetri Martin
As part of Mutant Salon’s efforts to create a living archive of queer resistance and community in LA, Mutant Salon and Young Joon Kwak invite seniors in the LGBT community share stories of past struggle and resistance, and the current challenges faced by this community. 49 years after the Stonewall Riots, younger generations can’t imagine what it was like to live at a time when it was illegal to be open about one’s sexual orientation and gender identity. In order to understand our position in the current political and social climate and to imagine the possibilities for what queer resistance could look like in the future, it is important for us to hear and archive the stories of how older generations dealt with stigmas of illness, perversion, and policing of bodies. Hosted by Dirty Looks.

Neighborhoods play a role in most people’s lives, whether they want them to or not. Some see them as a resource, as home, and a local community in these global times, others regard them as a challenge or the source of many conflicts. These multilayered constructs are the focus of the artists and initiatives taking part in this exhibition, several of which have a direct impact on neighborhoods by creating frameworks for contact and interaction through their project work. Datscha Radio generates urban fields of activity, always in new places throughout the city, and traces the communality of networks. The artist collective nomadicArt collects and archives the stories of a neighborhood, producing a collective consciousness in the process. Camping Akademie e.V. practices community art with the various groups and generations in a neighborhood and Ira Hadžić & Kevin Ryan investigate how different realities of life collide in the smallest of spaces. “So let them come, the gay incendiaries with charred fingers! Here they are! Here they are!… Come on! Set fire to the library shelves! Turn aside the canals to flood the museums!… Oh, the joy of seeing the glorious old canvases bobbing adrift on those waters, discolored and shredded!… Take up your pickaxes, your axes and hammers and wreck, wreck the venerable cities, pitilessly!”[1] The word Bridge describes an architectural functional structure that connects two places, and is commonly used as a metaphor. The command Burn your bridges is used as a strategic plan in situations of siege or persecution. Bridges symbolize physical and mental territories, changes and transitions between periods and interpersonal relationships. Often we advise our loved ones not to act impulsively and not to “burn bridges”. We are accustomed to thinking that the path to growth and progress must be based on creating continuity and bridging gaps. Sometimes, however, the only way to move on, to reinvent ourselves, to rise up like a phoenix from the painful memories – be it a harmful family, professional, social, or romantic relationships – is to sever the relationship irreversibly, to burn the bridges so that we can no longer go back, in order to prevent […]

Functional art bridges the “tenuous space between fine art and the everyday.” In this showcase our artists embrace their inner Otto and Vivika Heino to do just that. This show focuses on the intersection between imagination and functionality. Come witness art and function at its finest. “Good design to me is both appearance and functionality together. An exhibition of work and documentation of performance projects in Germany by American artist Lara Salmon, a SomoS resident for summer 2018. As part of her artistic practice here in Berlin, Salmon performs “Tower 13” a ritualised sleep-in at the Tempelhof airport for 30 days leading up to the opening date of her exhibition. She describes her intention of visiting the space every night and sleeping there as a poetic musing on the complicated history of the site itself. “As I lie in the night, a radar tower glowing ominously red looms above me. The Americans built it during their 50-year occupation of the airport. Below me is the 24-hour “Arrival Center for Asylum Seekers.” Beyond its entrance people wait to be sent to proper refuge shelters or to be denied asylum. Between the glare of the radar tower and the noises of trucks to the center, I drift in and out of sleep. ” — Lara Salmon, speaking about Tower 13 The artist will also exhibit a video project, produced in collaboration with Yaron Guerrero Santos, a fellow Los-Angeles artist and recent transplant to Germany, with whom she also performed at his recent solo exhibition at KdeWe in Stuttgart. Anna Horne, Archie Barry, Holly Bates, Isabella Hone-Saunders, Lou Fourie, Zoë Bastin. Presence looks at the ways in which the presence of the body is signified and materially understood through discussions of autonomy, the digital body, queer embodied experience and fetishisation. Focusing on sculptural forms and non-literal depictions of body, the project engages artists from marginalised perspectives as central to inform its discussion. Presence challenges the heteronormative gaze’s relationship with body through asserting the power of a queer gaze and approach to artistic practice. What happens when we take animated icons from our childhood and remake them as our “adult” selves? In this show, our artists embrace their inner Andy Warhol and Keith Haring to revive, repurpose, and destroy their favorite cartoon characters. Come see some of your favorite cartoons reimagined! “Pop Art looks out into the world. It doesn’t look like a painting of something, it looks like the thing itself”. – Roy Lichtenstein “I’ve never trusted Mickey Mouse and I doubt I ever will.” – Probably not Roy Lichtenstein

The exhibition project ultimately revolves around the ongoing transformation from the epicenter of the political power play of the Bonn Wohlfühl-Republik to the UN Climate Conference and the lofty goal of becoming a kind of Rhenish Salzburg, in which Beethoven – the city’s pride – is deliberately used for marketing reasons. – Ambitious projects that manage both cultural and political heritage and perhaps counteract the tendency to fall into oblivion and be placed in the shadow of nearby metropolises or the new capital Berlin. Liam Benson + Adorned, Jodie Haynes, Karen Casey, Teresa Hsieh, Mitch and Molly Mahoney, Justine Youssef. In a world seemingly felt through the digitalisation of relationships, and experienced through the overwhelming access to data, All of us is a timely reminder of the importance to connect; with people, with a vast range or perceptions, ideas and knowledge. The exhibition presents a contemporary framework by which to explore the importance of collaboration and the connections between artists, their practice, and the audiences they reach – providing an exploratory space to reflect on what it means to be a greater we. In this context, and in acknowledgement of the land that binds all of us, the exhibition celebrates the creative rewards of collective activity as a cultural strategy to encourage new connections, reveal those that might otherwise remain latent, and to address the global on a local level. Jan Murray Unseen continues Murray’s enduring exploration of the traditions of tromp l’oeil and investigation of the ‘anatomy’ of painting – specifically the relationship between the intrinsic and extrinsic architecture of the two dimensional canvas and the wall on which it is installed. Small paintings of air vent/grilles/chutes and similar architectural utilities are installed to masquerade as functional architectural elements throughout the Gallery and disappear into the white cube. These works are faithfully modelled on examples from various buildings throughout Melbourne including the Nicholas Building as well as those made in Berlin from a three-month residency at the Phasmid Studios in Marzahn (July-Sept 2017). This work alludes to the possibility of these functional elements not only enabling breath by means of ventilation or air circulation but sight and hearing as they function like ears – almost listening to the building. Perhaps too, they will operate metaphorically as eyes – allowing a glimpse into the past and the rich history embodied in the Nicholas Building – acting as conduits to hidden ‘realities’. Jan Murray completed her postgraduate qualifications at the VCA and RMIT University. Since 1981 she has shown regularly in both solo and group exhibitions in public museums, commercial galleries and artist […]
Talia Smith & Zainab Hikmet To long is to yearn for something or someone separated by distances in time and/or space. And they all say your name explores the subject of longing for a moment in time or place through light: an energy that is momentary and transient. Both artists utilise their time-based practices to create works that reflect their personal histories, connections and the ties that bind to the past, present and future. And they all say your name acts as a space for all of these oppositional structures to meet; the passing of time and memory, the spaces between, and the growing distance naturally created between people expressed through the temporal qualities of light. Talia Smith is an artist and curator from New Zealand but is now based in Sydney, Australia. Her photographic and video practice explores memory, time and ruin through the photographic medium and mans relationship to the landscape. She has exhibited widely throughout Australia, New Zealand, Germany and New York. Zainab Hikmet completed her Masters of Fine Arts at RMIT in 2015, following Undergraduate and Honours degrees from Auckland University of Technology. She has exhibited in various galleries throughout New Zealand and Australia and in 2015 was selected to complete […]

Contemporary Collaboration – international exhibition project – Pulchri Studio – The Hague Contemporary Collaboration is an international exhibition project in which the stimulation of alternative cooperation processes is central. The Contemporary Collaboration exhibition presents a group of artists who are all connected in different international networks and work intensively together in both their artistic processes and their professional professional practice. The concept for this exhibition is therefore aimed at stimulating new and synchronized forms of collaboration or ‘Contemporary Collaboration’. The objective of 10dence is the stimulation, introduction, organization and realization of alternative, inspiring and inventive processes to promote and support professional art practice. An incubator that cooperates intensively within various international networks with the aim of providing an independent platform for artists, for presenting and exhibiting their work at home and abroad. 10dence, in collaboration with artists’ initiatives such as Global Art Project (GAP), investigates how the creation and production of art can be cultivated by means of innovative network concepts and the development of alternative breeding grounds and residences that facilitate collaboration, experimentation and the multidisciplinary practice combines with strategic sustainability within individual professional practice. Under the title ‘Contemporary Collaboration’, initiator and visual artist Ron Weijers has compiled this […]

The 8th edition of POPPOSITIONS will revolve around the term “woke” and how its mainstream popularity and increasing application intersects with corporate and capitalist structures. The idea of being woke and wokeness concerns raising social awareness, taking actions in response to dominant paradigms, acknowledging one’s privileges towards understanding the struggles of others, and giving space to social bodies that have been silenced, unacknowledged and underrepresented. With the forthcoming edition of POPPOSITIONS we want to think collectively about what responses and forms of resistance can be formulated when ideologies have become trendy and woke-washing brands cash in on social justice. https://www.poppositions.com/framework2019 https://www.poppositions.com/opencall
Mia Middleton Using coded depictions of depth perception, Being There presents works which unpack the interdependent states of presence and absence, surface and void, and examines their pertinence and application within contemporary place making. In particular, the works navigate synthetic and utopic environments by breaking apart and re-purposing the virtual and tangible veneers that typify them. Romanticised wilds meet with monolithic forms and dark cavities, exploring the primal states buried beneath utilitarian sites. The result is a conflation of the domestic and the fantastic, where multiple spatialities exist in tandem, and sights and sounds commingle with coverings and facades. Mia Middleton is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Sydney, Australia. Since completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) in photo-media at UNSW Art and Design in 2013, Mia’s work has been exhibited at galleries both nationally and abroad, including the Museum of Contemporary Art ARTBAR, CICA Museum Korea, Aici Acolo Romania and the Athens Digital Arts Festival. She has been the recipient of the Canson Photography Prize and completed a suite of performances for performance art festival Desire Lines. In 2018 Mia will be travelling and undertaking a professional art residency in Barcelona before presenting a solo exhibition at Blindside Gallery. IMAGE | Mia […]
Stephen Palmer Endless Projection explores the production of perceptual experience through the interposition of the eye and the photographic apparatus. The works consist of particular gestures undertaken with the camera, which accentuate the corporeal dimension of vision, and play upon the seductive process of identification at stake in the image. Video works with rhythmic and cyclic structures are generated through the employment of restricted movements and serial processes. In testing the limits of the photographic apparatus, the works seek to expose the aleatory and precarious condition of subjective experience. Stephen Palmer is an artist and writer based in Melbourne. He recently completed a PhD in Fine Art at the Victorian College of the Arts, which examined the nature of perception in the writings of Samuel Beckett. He has taught, predominantly in Art Theory, at Universities in Melbourne. Recent exhibitions include Vexed Appendix (George Paton Gallery), Hesitation (BUS Projects) and Faux Novel (RMIT Project Space). He was a facilitator of Light Projects ARI, Northcote. Isn’t painting the art form with the least rules or restrictions remaining? One can choose to paint pictures of the real or the imaginary, to paint abstract shapes or not even shapes, to paint those for their own sake or merely as a means to explore process or materiality, relationship or meaning, or simply paint itself. Or not even paint, but instead use the entire gravitational mass of everything said and done within painting as a counterweight of reference – to pull something out of or bounce against, and thus try to contribute to the discourse. One can paint dead-serious, whimsical, cynical or with compassion, and achieve equally grand or unsuccessful positions. One can give up on painting since everything is already done, or throw oneself fully into it, since the sea of possibilities is vaster in painting than anywhere else. Composing Reality places four very different but equally confident painters in a room of opportunity and risk, balancing and bouncing off each other, and offering you as a visitor the chance to compare and consider, either by looking straight at their paintings, or at how they reflect in the painterly style of the others. All four stem from Sweden […]

…ism project space shows a new total installation by Paul Bogaers (Tilburg, 1961). The artist uses three very different spaces in the building for an artistic trilogy about the relationship between photography, sculpture and space. His photo sculptures occupy the project space and guide the visitor through the different scenes. For the first time, video projection is being used to unlock Bogaers’ state of mind. For the Vorspiel as part of Transmediale and CTM Festival 2019, Greg Kappes b. 1994 (USA/DE), will present a series of interactive, participatory installation and performance works centered around the spontaneous, fluid nature of community building and empathy. Kappes aims not only to recuperate our often strained relationships with technology by facilitating novel interaction, play, and connection, but also to show the possibility of molding technology to our own needs. With benevolent and playful methods, he masterminds a seductive system of approaches to reexamine the ways in which we relate to technology: Do we control our devices or do they control us? In one work, participants are led through a sort of choreography using only their cellphones and instructions provided by a website. This leads to an immersive shared experience that emphasizes our digital interconnectedness. But is this network virtual or is it embodied in the space? www.gregkappes.com Opening Saturday, January 26, 2019 18:00 – 22:00 Duration: Until February 2, 2019 Visit: Tuesday to Saturday 12-6pm. We are excited to announce the open call for our 2019 residency program! Land404 will invite a small group of artists to take part in a month long residency at our farm culminating in an exhibition on a nearby cape. We ask the participating artists to work with the nature and community surrounding the farm. Thematically investigating the relationship between modern people and nature as well as urban and rural states of being. The participants are encouraged to work freely with the themes. No discipline is preferred, but we are extra interested in experimental approaches, interdisciplinary work and social practice. This year we continue our collaboration with Dans i Blekinge, a residency for dancers and choreographers running parallel to ours. Land404s residency is intimate, intensive and experimental. As it takes place in our home there is a strong communal aspect, which we love. It is however important that applicants are aware that they will be expected to take responsibility for the well-being of the group as well as partake in daily tasks related to the house. In other words if you want a room and no-one to bother you for a month this is probably not the program for you. […]

In the performative installation Het Binnenhuis (The Interior), the central role is played by the spatial structure of the house. For two nights the house is taken over by 16 performers. The performers are not aiming at a theatrical spectacle but they focus on an atmosphere of domestic reality, according to strict rules, and fitting in the specific room they are in. Their movements are by and large predefined, and are finally worked out in improvisations. The performative installation is a transition zone between the public and the private, a territory where some spaces are closed and others are temporarily opened to visitors. During these two nights everybody is welcome, but not all the time and not everywhere. Performing: Kerem Akar, Liesje van den Berk, Carlinda Boom, Geerten Ten Bosch, Vladimir Bovt, Jos Deuss, Frits Dijcks, Ienke Kastelein, Frans van Lent, Marianne Linger, Hans van Lunteren, Jackson Moore, Leonard Passchier, Jello Reumer, Ieke Trinks, Iris van Wijk, advice: Pe Bies, video registration: Steef van Lent.

The colour reflects the (sometimes blind) intensity of his personality and stands for the all-pervasive self, the filter through which the world surges towards the him and through which he interacts with the world. „It is the ‘I’ I can’t escape, sometimes my friend, often my enemy, always walking right beside me.“ (Felix Baudenbacher) The point of origin for Dauerrezept, Felix Baudenbacher’s first solo presentation in Germany, is an act of self-revelation by the artist, which is answered by a gesture of self-aggrandisement and an image of violence. Felix Baudenbacher created a whole new body of work specifically for this exhibition. It consists of the works Dauerrezept, Dick pic (oh what fragile things we are), Never broken and Prescriptions.

We are very excited to collaborate with TAKT BERLIN to host a special Artist Talk at GlogauAIR on 24th May 2019. Sol Jee Ahn (resident artist at GlogauAIR) and Michelle Hyland (resident artist at TAKT) will present the project they are working on and discuss about their works. Sol Jee Ahn (South Korea, 1990) Investigating what it is to be a subject or object from different social standards’ view, Sol Jee Ahn explores the notion of the term ‘being foreigner’ and ‘local’ as a tool to connect the question of autonomy of cultural selfhood and owning a body. Seeking various definitions of ‘foreignness’ while different cultures collide, the platform of which these phenomena are shown discretely is one’s body. To be exact, a body as a landscape of authenticity becoming foreign matter, and on the other side of that landscape, the survival of such authenticity against foreign invasions such as viruses or medical drugs. Michelle Hyland Exploring the transitory nature of structures around Perth, Michelle captures the phase of renewal where disruptions are hidden behind scaffolding as work is completed. Recent work has documented these fleeting memories of transitional events in the process of a city responding to growth. Free […]

AIM Plovdiv 2019 – Local Connections 1–10 June, SKLAD, Plovdiv AIM Plovdiv 2019 – Local Connections brings together a range of European artist-run initiatives to connect independent Bulgarian art scene with the surrounding regions and internationally. The project builds on AIM Network’s long-term goals to facilitate connections, build new collaborations, strengthen the artist-run scene and make it accessible to the public. It develops the concept of working on a large-scale local basis across different but interconnected neighbouring regions. Despite the state borders, artists and curators often share similar social and cultural questions, common traditions and discourse in contemporary art, yet often they do not have the opportunity to meet in person and share their experience. The project will offer a range of events including public workshops, panel discussion, guided tour and exhibition. AIM Plovdiv 2019 is organised by AIM Network and Water Tower Art Fest and is realized as part of the official programme of Plovdiv – European Capital of Culture 2019. Das Kiez Monument is an art installation that includes a group of monuments dedicated to the Reuterstraße – the central one being made in collaboration with Centrum’s direct neighbourhood. The project aims to highlight the complexities of the Reuterstraße, its history, population and different languages. The neighbours get to decide about the content and execution of the monuments, tackling the underlying question: how do they want to be remembered in the future? Thus, the artist Patricia Sandonis with her project wants to give a voice to the people who usually don’t have a say when it comes to writing (their own) history. Moreover Das Kiez Monument is also intended as an “ecological” work of art which reflects on the materiality of our surroundings today, using the banal materials of our daily lives.
Solo Show DUMITRU GURJII ECHO | from natural to artificial Next week, the 13th of June | BUCHAREST E T A J presents the 17th one-night show, since May 2018, when we first opened. Dumitru Gurjii fills the space with a series of images, achieved through traditional and modern means, from painting and graphics to experimental art, installation, sound art, and video art, all of whom embody a single unitary world, ruled by chaos and order. Let’s turn one eye towards nature and the other towards our own worlds, both individual and collective, which we perpetually transform. I believe that, through this, ETAJ becomes a new world, that I first designed for myself, as a cosmogonical replica of the fundamental requisites of creation, which come to us as ECHOES. Now, I want my works to become “functional” and to be part of a global structure. I seek to build a SPACE that generates complementary, contemplative and empirical experiences. I am interested in how a thought becomes an IMAGE, through the act of materializing it, as well as in the constant principles of creation and in what guides nature in its manifestation and humans in their creation. A fundamental problem, that […]

Inspired by my childhood in the ’90s, “Of, ce dor, check-in, ce jale!” it’s an interpretation of the moment when communism clashed with capitalism. It’s the place where the east meets the west, the old meets the new, simplicity with opulence and the humor with sadness.
On June 21-22, 2019 GlogauAIR invites you to come explore work by our 10 talented international artists from across Europe, the USA, Asia, and South America, along with invited artists, Dig-Gal Collective from Berlin!

Both avid collectors of collections, Marc-Antoine K. Phaneuf, and Charles Sagalane are working collaboratively on an installation in the gallery where respective collections meet to become one on the walls of Regart. Constituted of a sample of objects from their personal collections, the result is heterogeneous and multifaceted. The objects are superimposed to a text painted on the walls. The four-handed text evokes the accumulation of words, objects, ideas, collections was first published in its entirety in 2016 in number 166 of Estuaire magazine. In the exhibition Ma collection d’exposition, a made-up character of a collector exists in the imagination. He is at once both and neither the authors-collectors. Ma collection d’exposition will be presented in the gallery of Regart from June 27 to August 18 2019.
With a research desk installed on her tricycle, Genevieve Gasse rides the bike path between Regart and the Maison Natale de Louis-Fréchette. During her travels, she creates spontaneous artistic manoeuvers which question what is in place in order to further her research on art. Vélo-Bureau: Le chemin pour se rendre is a project of relational art which grows based on the evolution of the research by the artist and her meetings with the public. Gasse is asking “What is art?” and questioning the artistic process and the different steps as well as the multiple roles the artist takes on in their practice. In the gallery window and the entrance of Regart, Gasse diverts the initial function of the space by installing the Centre de recherche en art infiltrant (CRAI). Searchers occupy the temporary office space with the mission of doing research and artistic maneuvers questioning established systems like the initial function of an object, space as well as norms and perceptions. The CRAI also has for mandate to manage the activities of the desk-cycle. During a writer residency over the summer, author and art critic Cynthia Fecteau will join Gasse on her bike path journey and recount the events. An inventory of texts […]
Along the course of the St-Laurent river, Marc-Antoine K. Phaneuf offers us Anticipation perpétuelle, an out of the ordinary literary trail composed of ten signs pegged along the bike path. Depending on which way we are coming from, the nature of the messages shifts. On one side we can re-discover aspirational and wishful quotes about the twenty-first century from the after-war years. On the other side, in echo, the signs display the consequences of the alarming and evergoing growth of the human race. « The two reading place in opposition two sides of our era : the one that was dreamed about and idealized in the past, that was evoking a better life, already fast behind and outdated by nowadays technology ; and the one decried, telling an unknown and scary future, more a nightmare than a dream, a much less innocent vision than after the war, a brutal awakening to bad things to come.« – Marc-Antoine K. Phaneuf Anticipation perpétuelle will be presented along the St-Laurent river from June 27 to August 18 2019

The year 2020 marks the 100th Anniversary of the prolific period of intercultural artistic exchange, the interwar period of Ecole de Paris, the 1920s. Referred to as Les Années Folles or the Roaring Twenties, this is when Montparnasse became the heart of intellectual and artistic life for international artists, writers, performers, and musicians working and living alongside each other in this prominent artistic neighborhood of the French capital. Located in Montparnasse, L’AiR Arts at FIAP Paris is pleased to commemorate this historical legacy and host a multidisciplinary residency for international artists and cultural professionals. Dedicated to the celebration of intercultural exchange through the arts, this residency will take place in January 2020 and offer a series of open and inclusive cultural events, including open studios, talks and showcases – each built on the generosity of the Paris based professionals and the curiosity and solidarity of international arts community. Program Overview: The idea of this residency is to revisit and develop the open and creative energy of the 1920s as well as the spirit of solidarity and unity that allowed arts community to thrive in the heart of France and of Europe during this politically and socially strained war-torn period. During […]

exhibition, performances, screenings 11-13 July 2019, >top space, Schillerpromenade 4, 12049 Berlin curated by Seeta Muller and Penka Mincheva From the pre-historic times, the artifacts are known either as a movement, like rock fresco of a hunting man, or as a three-dimensional object such as a sculpture or a built construction. Like the pyramids, constructed stone by stone, completing a whole assembly, the media which depict movement – as the film and video – appear to be constructed slide by slide, creating a motion. Speaking about Architecture of Mind through the methods of video art, we can consider several aspects in building an image such as a story or a message, discovering the architectural methods of thinking and developing an idea, emotion or an impression. Building up an image of an image, creating an imaginary reality, constructing elements of entire thought, inverting existed perspective, replacing the inner with the outer, constructing dreamed goals, manipulating a software engineering and speaking about a human-built system are regarded as subjects referreing to a number of layers of a developing process of creation. This particular collection of views presents the direct and the indirect touch with the architectural object or processes. The artworks are […]
Phoenix Athens launches a new light residency programme for artists who wish to live in Athens. The light residency coincides with the Villa Exarcheia and is designed to help artists to develop their practice and conduct research in Athens. The project that Neno Belchev will present at Espai sant Marc on the 24th of July is “About some features, specifics and consequences of “street” video art with “poor” quality in one frame” The project ironically combines the creative approaches of video art with street art and actionism in urban environments. Examining their different aspects, the project aims to find new public language. It uses the different opportunities, which are offered by these seemingly different media through its innovative approach to them in a way that aims to maximize the impact. Technically, the project works with handy and found materials, thereby reducing budget expenses to a minimum. It elegantly avoids the hooligan approach in street art and puts social messages in a new context. Neno Belchev, graduated in Mural Painting from the National Academy of Art in Sofia, Bulgaria. He works as video artist and filmmaker as well as in the fields of performance, installation, sculpture and new media. Neno has made one full-length movie, four medium-length documentaries and numerous short narrative films and video art works, which won prizes, awards and nominations from international video and film festivals in the United States, Russia, the Netherlands, Spain, India, Malaysia, Romania and Austria, […]
CrossingBorders What Borders are you willing to cross? An exhibition of works by members of Global Art Project, an international multimedia collaborative collective with over 50 members from 15 different countries. Exhibition concept: The Borders are wide, various, concrete and philosophical, offering an illusion of safety and definitive organization of reality ignoring the shifts in need and agendas at play at any given time on the international stage and the internal stage. Borders as a theme not defined, but implied. The obvious way to look at Borders is as it relates to geographic demarcation and socio-political implications, the artists in this exhibition take it one step further; Borders that confound and limit us personally; Borders to be psychologically challenged, broken through and/or accepted. Risk is the enemy of Fear. Love is the enemy of Hate. Change is the enemy of Complacency. The artists in this exhibition are familiar with Borders and how it manifests in their lives as creative human beings. Emphasis must be given to the importance and timeliness of this exhibition as an outlet for frustration and anxiety as artists attempt to illustrate, enact and represent both change and consciousness raising on a world-wide scale as well as […]

THE TIDAL FLOOD BENEATH THE LUNAR SWAY Lili Agg, Nikolett Balázs, Bence Barta, Ron Fischer, Veronika Romhány, Nóra Teplán Opening: August 15, 2019 / 7pm August 15 – September 6, 2019 The exhibition comprises works from six young artists from Hungary, members of MŰTŐ (Budapest, HU), an artist-run independent platform and art collective with the mission to create a physical space for young artists to experiment and find new ways of creation. Through a diverse program they try to expand the boundaries of art, focusing on emerging artists, building a community through a critical curatorial approach and democratic structure based on DIY culture. Most of the works in the exhibition appear to be the result of a process of sedimentation, both physical and theoretical, embedded with layers of labor and discourse. Several pieces relate to the influence of power and/or structures of power over the individual. Some of the artworks seem as if they were the conclusion of a natural and violent catastrophe, like a hurricane or a flood; bits of once complete things, that have been torn, shredded, eroded and decayed. Others are unharmed and intact, but nevertheless in their wholeness they are a reaction to “the fragmented identity […]

ARTIST CALL OUT tactileBOSCH presents Under the Counter Culture an immersive, site responsive, multimedia programme celebrating the interconnection between art and nightculture. UTCC takes place across multiple venues presenting exhibitions, events, performances, screenings and participatory workshops Night Culture has long been at the forefront of avant-garde arts practice and the aesthetic and atmosphere of club culture has informed and inspired creative activity, individual and collective action where inhibitions and expectations are deconstructed, revealing a platform for free expression, experimentation, participation and play. Artists are asked to submit work that explores and celebrates all aspects of night culture and the counter cultural and non normative activities that it inspires. We shine a light on the value of grass roots night spaces to our urban landscpape and their ability to create action environments that encourage participation, invent new cultural forms and build new connections and their efforts to build unique platforms for inclusion, connection and presence in a world of increasing hostility and disconnect. tactileBOSCH invites submissions from both emerging and established artists. Artists and musicians from all mediums are invited to apply, however live work, performance, audio visual and installation is particularly encouraged. Opportunities exist for large scale site responsive work, […]

This workshop will be an intensive introduction to a number of powerful approaches to self cultivation and creative analysis. It will equip you with the requisite tools to create a rooted personal vision and to fulfil that vision within your chosen medium – be it an artistic project, a creative practice or indeed any part of your life. The three day, fully catered residency will take place at a self-sustaining artists’ retreat and smallholding set within 40 acres of ancient woods and farmland close to the West Dorset coast. During three days of workshops, games, seminars and rigorous bodywork, teacher and maker Ryan Kiggell will offer a comprehensive introduction to a range of approaches that will lead the participants into this creative process. Applying the techniques to their lives and work, participants will learn to unlock deeper states of insight, presence and spontaneity, galvanise their imagination and make work that is intimately connected to living sources of inspiration. The residency is characterised by its search for new connections, exchange and learning amongst artists. Between training sessions there will be time for roaming through ancient woodland, trips to the nearby Jurassic coast, camp fires, communal eating and personal retreat time. Whilst aimed […]

The Collectivists – Group Portrait Curator: Orly Hoffman Opening: Thursday 29.8 at 20:00, Tel Aviv Artists’ House The exhibition The Collectivists – Group Portrait presents six Tel Aviv collective galleries under one roof in Tel Aviv Artists’ House. The members of the galleries were invited to carry out a self-curated action, to formulate an index and an ID of sorts that will outline the portrait of its collective activity. The exhibition features Alfred Gallery, P8 Gallery, Hanina Gallery, Indie Gallery, Benjamin Gallery, and the young Nolobez Gallery, each selected themes and subject matters that represent and reflect their own DNA in different ways. The gallery artists, who are usually engaged in the administrative and practical operation of the gallery as a space for solo exhibitions and various collaborations with guest artists, were invited to present themselves/their work together as a collective. This brief and task became a driving force that challenged the underlying foundations of each gallery, which for the most part, are not addressed in the interaction and shared artistic creation of all of its members. The act of coming together, searching for an idea, looking for connections and common references in the works, summoned a process of introspection […]

Exhibition: E to the power of 6 by Johan Eriksson and Mattias Larson Thursday 12th September 7pm: Opening Friday 13th September 7pm: Artist Talk & Soup Saturday 14th September 8pm: Concert by Hybris Healers Drawn fictitious urban maps on recycled envelopes by Johan Eriksson and a model of sustainable development, built on site with household waste by Mattias Larson. Johan Eriksson about his art: ”I designed my first mapas a five-year-old. The inspiration for drawing ones own urban landscapes came from an interest in Stockholm’s buildings, traffic and rail-related public transport and also how this is depicted in maps and city plans. Eventually I discovered more of the outside world and other major cities such as. Beijing, Berlin, Pittsburgh and others. During the 1990s, I started a correspondence with various traffic companies around the world regarding modern tram traffic in Stockholm. Some of the envelopes I work with come from these traffic companies, others are from friends who send me letters from different countries. Different sorts of stamps, addresses on or a fold in the envelope form the conditions I must relate to. I see a possible picture in the relationships between these, how the cities are built in relation […]
In a near future, a pizza delivery guy and his wife Feu Carthasis are in love and their story is passionate and full of rhythm and music. He used to be a sculptor and a DJ in a nightclub. She has been possessed by an old teacher of her, Fulcanelli the alchemist and since then has been lounging in fake palaces posing as operas. In this profoundly wild ghetto, marginal artists rub shoulders in rivalry. Their attempts to break off with their past grow tired and the pizza delivery guy run into a mutant, the new hope of contemporary art who scatters desire and dust upon the city. Performative intrigues, artistic manipulations and transforming states mark L’opéra d’or, a polyphonic writing project starring the voice of ambitious marginal artists whose destiny is yet to be fulfilled. Choir and visual art, installation and sound which draws from the codes of catharsis, intrigue, choral book, epic music, expressionism and thriller tv shows. Opening on Friday, Septembre 13, 2019 at 6pm Performance on Thursday, October 31, 2019 at 6pm Artists and performers, Geneviève Crépeau and Matthieu Dumont have been collaborating since the end of the nineties under the name Geneviève et Matthieu. Their work is […]
Tides are a sign of passing time. By observing the river or the ocean tide, a whole dimension is hidden, underneath the water. A whole universe exists. Because of climate change, the world is transforming. Marine species started moving but they are not all as fast and they cannot all adapt at the same pace. Some species are endangered by these changes. The project Marées is a poetic reflexion about passing time and changes that are happening in all bodies of water everywhere. Members’ Window Show Opening on Friday, Septembre 13, 2019 at 6pm Martin Cormier has a training in Visual Arts from Université de Montréal à Québec and in Education from Université du Québec à Rimouski. His work was exhibited in multiple exhibitions in Quebec and is part of public and private collections in Canada, the United States and Europe. His artistic practice is mostly photography, drawing and print and questions time and duration in relationship to existence (beginning to end, life and death). Ecology also takes an important place in his reflexion.

Playing GOD” is emphasizing on the artist’s individuality, while “why?” asks the question of the individual intervention within the group. „why?” questions the ethics and morality of “playing GOD”. „why?”, in this case, is addressing the critical eye, the art consumer, the one who decides whether someone’s creation is worthy of becoming iconic. What is good art, what is bad art? Who deserves the limelight? Who gets to decide? Who gets to play God in our daily lives and what are the rules of the game?

aa-02 Paadmaan Video Event is an international video event born in Tehran, Iran, seeking to explore video documentations of recent interdisciplinary works of art (e.g. installation, performance, new media). Organized by Paadmaan Projects, the Video Event considers ‘video’ as its central theme. The event emphasizes on video in the context of the art documentation, while addressing the challenges embedded within the so-called ‘documentation’ of interdisciplinary art works. Priority is given to works of art that portray these kinds of challenges, from the lens of the artist with attention to the artistic decisions made during the process of the documentation. Paadmaan is an independent artist-run platform that aims to promote the development of a positive shared community identity and self-empowerment by expanding on existing discourses surrounding contemporary art. The archival project is done in collaboration with itinerant venues to create an alternative platform for holding a collective discourse to amplify already-existing interdisciplinary art content, and to discuss reviewing documentation of art projects in terms of representation [in addition to the video screenings]. Videos can be submitted here: https://filmfreeway.com/PaadmaanVideoEvent
Opening reception Friday 18th October 2019 from 6 pm to 10 pm. With a performance by SIMKA at 8 pm. While inspecting a somewhat masterful figurative painting, it is easy to forget that in no way is it a captured image of something real. It is merely a collection of pigments on a surface. Especially nowadays, with all of us being more or less experts in viewing and judging photographs, it is worthwhile reiterating the exact relationship between motif and painting: The artist observes a scene or object and using her skill and cultural understanding, then fixes paint and pigment to a background. Another person, upon seeing this display, uses his own cultural understanding and imagination to interpret what it is the artist has depicted. No automatism is present in this relationship. There are no guarantees that the audience will see or feel what the artist intended. A certain amount of shared cultural understanding, as to what constitutes a painting and how it is to be made, is crucial for there to be communication – which is the key-word here. Making and looking at a painting is an act of communication, not of recording. This becomes all the more evident […]
Gaslight is the clinical term used to describe psychological abuse. The victim is manipulated in various forms, especially by denying the act of abuse, therefore weakening her / his judgment. The aftereffect can be compared to the state of brain hallucinations, damaging the mechanism of perception, responsible for both recalling the past and designing predictions for the future. This project denounces such an experience (avoiding extreme paranoia, as well as conspiracy theories), using the way that reality is built and what sets the values of what is true or not. Trapped in a box, the brain gets stimulated, through our senses and, that will determine the perception of reality. Whenever you want to recall something, it is going to be tainted because the brain pulls a memory out of a hidden drawer, then the interpretation with the new YOU, the ever-changing YOU, is going to change your perception of the past. You can cope with reality using the idea that you get to choose what your brain gets contaminated with, practising empathy until you expand your sense of self, thus, getting relief from the role of the victim.

Alfred gallery is happy to announce a year of exhibitions examining the concept exhibition space and expanding its initial definition. At the dawn of the third decade of the 21st century, we seek to challenge the traditional conception of exhibitions and exhibition spaces, and to re-examine their role in the artistic field. Upon reaching 15 years of activity, the Alfred cooperative members seek to open a practical discussion around these issues and try to redefine our mission as a collaborative gallery and as an art and cultural institute. This is an open invitation for project proposals that focus on collaborations and consist of multi-medium works in various fields of arts: visual art, music, poetry, dance, theater and film, and that may integrate with other fields of knowledge: science, technology, humanities, activism and more. We are looking for projects that seek to explore the potential of events and occurrences in the exhibition space as part of the creative process they propose. We would be happy to receive proposals based on transitions between mediums and disciplines, and on exploring the relations between those areas as a form to produce synergy. Proposals may consist of a collaborative work produced as a team, or […]

RafinX RafinX is an ongoing artistic research, started by Cristian Ghiță during his bachelor studies (2016-2017) which follows the posthumanist premises of the individual’s repositioning towards technique and nature. More precisely, started as a photographic documentation and continued as a series of objects and installations, the current research addresses one of the topics of acute recent interest, namely the situation of the abandoned industrial landmarks of the communist era. The project opens several directions for analysis: the disuse and abandonment situation, the destruction of the identity of highly industrialized cities, and the question of human intrusion into the natural space. Nature’s willpower shouldn’t be neglected, as she is capable of retrieving the decrepit technological perimeter, of gradually reclaiming any human construction, regardless of size, force or purpose. The ephemeral nature of the human condition pushes the analysis in the direction of questioning the validity of modern anthropocentrism, in order to establish posthuman ethics and aesthetics. The industrial site chosen by the artist is the Astra Refinery, located near the town of Ploiești, one of the most important Romanian industrial centres. This choice is not accidental. We know that our identity is intimately related to the places where we spend parts […]
AADK Spain invites all artists and researchers who wish to work on the topics of body, territory and spatiality to participate in its Artistic Residency Program. For this edition, priority will be given to those proposals that focus on an expanded concept of architecture. We propose to consider listening and modelling spaces, experimenting with ways of inhabiting and recovering the memory of places as possible lines of action. For those interested in working with the community of Blanca, please bear in mind that projects of less than two months will not be accepted. The ability of artists to establish respectful relationships with the inhabitants and to be willing to engage in trial-error processes will be fundamental for these proposals. Theoretical research projects of any scientific or humanistic discipline may be applied to this call, provided that they have the artistic practice as their object of study. The Artistic Residency Program is carried out in Centro Negra, the current headquarters of AADK Spain located in the town of Blanca, Murcia. This program is a space for reflection and artistic research that encourages linking research with the historical, cultural and geographical context of the region. `Kandinsky claimed that artistic feelings were actually about perception, so colours can influence your mood. Yellow is potentially upsetting while blue predisposes most people to meditation, having a soothing effect. Kandinsky’s theories on colour were similar to those of Goethe: certain colours can cause certain emotions. Colour has the ability to put the viewer in direct connection with his spiritual state. “Loud Silence of colours” proposes a game, a walk in the imaginary world, a parallel reality that materializes by mere awareness. Automatism and improvisation underlie the biomorphic and fluid forms and the continuous lines, they are aided by exploring the unconscious and exploiting colours to their maximum capacity. How do we translate thinking mechanisms in a visual form? We can find a language and some systems by which to express them. The twist is that the viewer can also become a creator because each of us perceives things differently. Therefore, his role is an important one because he has the ability to compose and decompose what he sees and create his own feeling. What happens when we try to translate sound into colour or condition into a form? You tell me.
