The term wonder reflects a situation which is inexplicable via human perception, wonders happen in rare occasions, they are neither routine nor seem realistic. The word combination “no wonder” is often used to describe an occurrence which could be predicted and expected. In this exhibit, Hazan Bloom and Schwartz Lev Har deal with the wonder in routine moments occurring in their local urban environment.
Hazan Bloom places herself in a position of observation, she is at once a bystander and personally related to those she scrutinizes. Hazan Bloom frames leisure activities of asylum seekers who live in her surroundings, freezing events she observes and preserving them through the medium of photography and sculpture. For example, in the video Thirteen Minutes she witnesses a wedding procession, by looping the parade she outlines the moment and separates it from the essence of the event as a whole. Furthermore, in the work Har Zion 3 she depicts weekend leisure activities occurring on a traffic island in Har Zion Street in Tel Aviv, referring to these as an ongoing-present.
Schwartz Lev Har extracts wonders from mundane instances by re-creating and manipulating existing everyday objects. Her work refers to the urban environment and elements comprised in its structure. The objects Schwartz Lev Har focuses on usually accompany an action or main event, and are in fact essential and telling about the characteristics of that which they accompany. For instance in the work Stool –named after one of the most common seating furniture of ancient times– the stool is made of pink-shaded cement, a color akin to that of financial newspapers, thereby referencing the economic theory of the three legged stool.
