To take reference, to offer, to deny.
To play with references, to lay tracks or to solve traps.
Four artistic positions gather around something that could be described as a sounding out of referencing, as a permanent locating in the change of being and world. The individual artistic positions do not correspond to each other in approach, materiality or narrative. Nevertheless, they create a multi-layered network of relationships and references, of mutual questioning and
reinforcement. Ultimately, it is a dynamic that emerges from the compilation of these four positions. All artists live and work mainly in Berlin. Partly they are also active and at home in other European countries. The HilbertRaum as an open space, expecting the unexpected, is ideal to give this dynamic and the resulting exhibition Vague a new home.
A general reference can arise through materiality, given locality, or familiar narratives. Things picked up from the street and other found objects enable a transition from the outside to the inside, from the general to the particular.
Lines also transition, from one thing to another, from black to white.
Colors mix and faces emerge.
Metal shimmers and water ripples softly.
This is all hometown and world events. Myth and vision.
They are starting points and frames of reference. They stand in the context of virtuality and and mediality, temporality and consumption.
They are negotiated and exchanged, transformed and ridiculed. Their meaning disappears or grows beyond itself.
Until memory blurs and something new begins. Humor emerges into the field. Distance again. Reality becomes a vague assumption, one’s own location a permanent mystery.
