Curator-Run Space

Edge to Edge is a ViCA initiative that puts into action our policy of continual push to collaborate with artists and institutions across borders. In the first Edge to Edge show throughout 2019 we showed American and Estonian art in the US in our gallery, then did the same in Estonia over the summer. Each country being one edge of western civilization. Then we turned to our southern neighbor, and used the border as a metaphor for Edge to Edge, and brought 12 Mexican artists to the U.S. for the first time. In another participating gallery (in Venice, CA) closed for during the outbreak, we’ll install 12 artists from Japan in a few days, then show the work virtually online. In 2021 (postponed from this coming May) 12 galleries in our building will be hosting an equal number of galleries or more from Berlin. What ideas do you have? How can we help?   The Foundry Art Centre is a dynamic community art center dedicated to the creation and presentation of contemporary visual arts. Our mission is to connect everyday people with the arts through our studio artists, educational classes, special events, and exhibitions. Featuring a state-of-the-art gallery space, the Foundry hosts national and international juried fine art exhibitions and curated traveling exhibitions.

BERLIN-WEEEKLY was founded in June 2010 as an art project space by Stefanie Seidl. The 4,5, meter high room is a double-glazed former gateway for horse-drawn carriages in the historic Jewish Scheunenviertel in Berlin Mitte. The showcase space, which is illuminated until late at night, can be regarded as a kind of public stage on which the artists can stage an installation, representative of their work. The potential of the public showcase is to reach a wide, diverse audience. As a result of its one-sided orientation to the street BERLIN-WEEEKLY thus functions as an artistic intervention in public space. The exhibitions do not change weekly (as the name suggests and was initially planned), but every month. Though the installations are clearly visible from the outside until late at night, the room itself is always closed except for the regular openings and for special events and presentations. Founded in 1976, Touchstone Gallery is located in a custom-built street-level space at 901 New York Avenue NW, Washington, DC. Since the beginning, Touchstone’s mission has remained unaltered: to enrich the lives of the community through diverse contemporary art exhibitions; to promote a rich variety of art talent in the DC region; to showcase national and international artists whenever possible; and to foster continuing artistic and career growth of its 50 member artists through encouragement and support.   The Kalashnikovv Gallery was established in 2013 by long term collaborators M.J Turpin and Matthew Dean Dowdle out of frustration with the current South African Contemporary Art world and by extension, the prevailing “white cube” gallery discourse.They chose to create a hybrid space, bouncing to-and-fro between an independent artist run space, project space and commercial gallery space. Another key factor in the gallery’s inception was the decision not to compartmentalize creativity by showing art that is solely validated through academic practice and saleability. the Kalashnikovv ethos will forever champion the progressive alternative, the “outsider”, the artist as curator and the independent artist in all their creative guises and manifestations.   Camayuhs is an artist run gallery located in the Peachtree Hills neighborhood of Atlanta, GA. Programming aims to highlight emerging and mid-career artists via presentations of group and two person exhibitions.

Glitter Ball showroom & projects is an artist-run venture for contemporary art and artists – a local space for international art. We invite exciting and inspiring artists and projects to present artworks and events in our showroom on the lower ground floor of the Old Gymnastic Hall. A new exhibition or project is launched the first Saturday of each month in our spring and autumn seasons, spring runs March to June and autumn September to December. bi’bak (Turkish: have a look) is a non-profit organization and cultural space based in Berlin, with a focus on transnational narratives, migration, global mobility and their aesthetic dimensions. bi’bak’s programme examines diverse disciplines in art, academics, and community development, including film screenings, exhibitions, workshops as well as music events and culinary excursions. bi’bak is a non-profit organization founded in 2014 by the artists and curators Malve Lippmann and Can Sungu. The curated film programme, bi’bakino, as well as the audio programme bi’bakaudio aims to show transnational, postcolonial and postmigrant perspectives. Experts invited from the fields of art, film and academics will enable a more differentiated, explicitly non-European view of society and cultural history. bi’baxchange offers a platform for cultural actors, initiatives and projects and initiates cross-border collaborations. bi’bakwerk is interested in the development of innovative location-based mediation concepts, which aim at an equal participation and the exchange of ideas, knowledge and creativity. bi’bak’s research-based exhibitions focus on dimly-lit narratives in (Western) Europe in order to generate new perspectives that are crucial for a comprehensive understanding of socio-political and socio-economic contexts worldwide. bi’bak was awarded a project space by the Berlin Senate for Culture and Europe in 2017.

  EYES ONLY is a non-profit art space with the focus on an exchange of ideas and international art projects, in which the classical distribution of roles between artist, gallery, museum, curator and collector are (to be) disbanded.  

  Zaratan – Arte Contemporânea is a not-for-profit space and an organization founded by artists in Lisbon city center in November 2014. Zaratan is a creation, production and promotion structure for contemporary art and a space of reflection and listening. In order to stimulate creativity and contribute to generate valid cultural processes, Zaratan has developed so far a heterogeneous and mostly free of charge agenda of events, that parallel to the regular schedule of exhibitions, presents video-projections, concerts, talks by artists, presentations and performances. Zaratan defends an interdisciplinary attitude and aims to promote a deeper comprehension of the artistic languages of the present with an independent structure.  

  Julio Artist-run Space is an independent project specialized in the production, distribution and commercialization of contemporary art propositions, founded by the artists Maria Ibanez Lago and Constanza Piaggio. Julio has been running since 2016 in the Belleville-Ménilmontant neighborhood in Paris, hosting exhibitions called “Assemblage #”, which bring together two to three artists for one month, as well as specific presentations (performances, book presentations, conferences, etc.). It connects Argentinian and international artists generating links between consummate and emerging artists, from diverse generations and mediums.  

  ada is… ein Projekt zur künstlerischen Zwischennutzung, welches ausgehend von den lokalen Gegebenheiten versucht KünstlerInnen zur Auseinandersetzung dieser conditio humana einzuladen, um dahingehend auch die eigene Rolle in der Gesellschaft zu hinterfragen. „Die einzige Konstante – ist die Transformation“ Dazu werden dort regelmäßige Präsentationen von unterschiedlichen Positionen der Gegenwartskunst stattfinden. Der Fokus ist eine breit gefächerte Präsentation (Malerei, Bildhauerei, Performance, Medienkunst etc.) von Kunst im Wechselspiel mit der Örtlichkeit. Ziel ist die Schaffung einer sich prozesshaft transformierenden Ausstellung, mit jeweils in situ entstehender Kunst, die in Symbiose mit dem Raum geschieht. Ein Umgang mit der Umgebung, eine Herausforderung an das Schaffen selbst – Ephemera und das du. Die Ausstellungsreihe zum Thema der Verwandlung und Vergänglichkeit der Identität repräsentiert in den Resten der menschlichen Existenz, ist die Vorgabe der Wandlung, nicht um das alte wieder lebendig zu machen sondern die Kunst als Sonde in die vielfältigen Ebenen der Humankondition zu nützen.   GAP Is a membership based international collaborative of Mixed-media Artists whose active participants number 53 members working in 12 countries, depending on the project. Having roots initially in web based activity beginning in 2012 (post card and correspondence art projects such as KNEE(jerk) Fragmentation Project). GLOBAL ART PROJECT has generated numerous workshops, exhibitions and collaborative studio experiences in Venice, Lecce and Treviso Italy, Mazatlan, Mexico, Dakar, Senegal, Ghent, Belgium, The Netherlands, North Carolina, New York, Minneapolis, MN, San Francisco, Mill Valley, Benicia, Sausalito and Novato, California. Our work reflects individual, personal and global concerns by virtue of intention. We are creating and exhibiting work that allows freedom of expression given this unique format to communicate beyond language and culture with diverse artists from all over the world while remaining open to the opportunities of the moment accessed through this circumstance in settings allowing interaction not only with each other but local arts communities as well. The Neon Heater is a contemporary artist-run space in Findlay, OH owned and curated by Ian Breidenbach and Emily Jay. It opened in November of 2012, and has monthly exhibitions with a curatorial focus on conceptual and installation based works, contemporary photography and painting trends, and video and new media. Aside from the gallery space The Neon Heater also partners with the larger artist-run community to curate exhibitions around the United States. In 2017, The Neon Heater started The Neon Temple Press, a small run zine and artist book publishing branch.  The Neon Heater also created and maintains a database of artist-run initiatives in the state of Ohio at www.current-oh.art  

Russian American Cultural Center (RACC) aims to provide permanent cultural representation to more than 700,000 Russian-speaking residents of New York. It was founded in 1998 by Dr. Regina Khidekel and earned its 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status in 1999.

Push/Pull’s mission is to: Promote underground art and comics Foster community between those creating and viewing art Encourage emerging artists, illustrators and cartoonists Innovate the way art is consumed by presenting it in a unique environment and with nontraditional events Stimulate Diversity by actively seeking out marginalized and under-represented artists Underground art is work that challenges the viewer to feel something, to think about something. Operating since November 2004, we are committed to showcasing, developing, and broadening the reach of artists locally and internationally.  

Kleine Humboldt Galerie is a student-run initiative from Berlin curating bi-annual contemporary art exhibitions at the atrium of Humboldt-Universities main building. Past exhibitions have dealt with diverse subject matters such as educational politics, feminism, the dream of a universal language, cultures of political protest and scientific methods of visualization.

BUREAU of CHANGE is an education-centric lab for real art practice in New Orleans. We create, curate and exhibit socially and politically engaged work. BUREAU of CHANGE was founded by Margot Herster with a group of her former students and recent graduates from Louisiana State University. Originating out of dissatisfaction with higher education, particularly in arts and media, BUREAU developed into a new school in the form of an atelier-style studio.  A diverse group—established artists and designers, paid student apprentices and young artists, scholars and community experts, and the public—interact to create. Our objectives are influenced by the Works Progress Administration’s Federal Art Project implemented during the Great Depression. We harken a a lost but not forgotten era when the government stimulated jobs in the arts by employing artists to create public works and subsidizing community education centers that offered training in arts skills applicable to industrial jobs of the time. Our process commissions artists and non-artists to collaborate on creative works aimed at inciting institutional change while studying social technology, digital media theory, interdisciplinary research and artistic production.
