Started in the summer of 2011, NAPOLEON was simply a lease to a small room in a great building and a lot of unfettered energy. Within a couple months, the experiment sprouted legs.
NAPOLEON is a collective whose members share the financial and managerial responsibilities of running the gallery. Our core values as a collective are responsibility (to our community and to our craft), inclusivity (of all types of art and artists), and creativity (in the work that we do and how we run our collective). As an exhibition space, we hope to improve the visibility of under-recognized art and artists in our region by curating month-long exhibitions. Alternately, we provide a platform for our artist-members to show their work in our gallery and we participate in collaborative exchanges with other galleries, both in Philadephia and beyond. In addition to exhibitions, our essay-writing program, that operates in conjunction with our exhibition cycle, offers a platform for arts writers near and far to share their craft.
We are located in the Rollins Building which houses other galleries such as Vox Populi, Tiger Strikes Asteroid, Marginal Utility, Automat, Practice, and Grizzly Grizzly. NAPOLEON is named for our small size. We are a 225 square foot gallery- just the right size for one big idea at a time.
