The Union is a newly created Oslo-based organization (2020), an artist-run mediation platform consisting of Slovakian Martinka Bobrikova, Peruvian-Palestinian Rodrigo Ghattas-Pérez, and Spanish Oscar de Carmen. One of the core missions of The Union is to explore new socio-political realities through digital and physical activism and creative-citizen movements: the impact of Covid-19 – for artists, activists, thinkers, and creative minds – and its aftermath, being one of the most urgent ones. The Union´s laid-back projects target power structures in institutions, triggering loosen-up critical reflections through the use of unconventional, domestic, and experiential practices. We work to create other valorization structures for art, life, and culture, and to reshape the publics’ interaction; to actively participate in the collective design of new forms of care, participation, and empowerment through the arts. Whilst we cultivate countercultures and creative-civil community engagement.

EST art foundation’s purpose is to stimulate and explore new developments within concrete art. EST will initiate exhibitions, attract public attendance, invite international partnerships, house a library, a collection and host discussions to foster knowledge about concrete arts. Throughout, EST will operate according to Fair Practice principles.

Founded in 2009, Arquetopia Foundation is an internationally established, award-winning non-profit arts and cultural foundation based in Mexico, Peru and Italy, with a social scope that emphasizes critical thinking through artistic practices.   Yellow Brick is a non-profit artistic workspace that fosters relations among local and international artists, art collectives, curators, writers, thinkers and makers with the Athenian context as predominately accessed and introduced through the area of Nea Ionia.  Initiated by artist Vasiliki Sifostratoudaki in 2016, Yellow Brick has so far hosted 32 artists from 25 countries.  Yellow Brick wishes to participate in the cultural production of the city by focusing on the Athenian periphery and more specifically on Yellow Brick’s locale, a culturally diverse neighborhood established by immigrants from the coast of Asia Minor. Yellow Brick understands local identity as an assemblage of cultures, histories, languages, expressions and forms, and welcomes artists and cultural practitioners to activate and sustain a creative dialogue within Nea Ionia and greater Athens through their current interests, social concerns and artistic practices. Edge to Edge is a ViCA initiative that puts into action our policy of continual push to collaborate with artists and institutions across borders. In the first Edge to Edge show throughout 2019 we showed American and Estonian art in the US in our gallery, then did the same in Estonia over the summer. Each country being one edge of western civilization. Then we turned to our southern neighbor, and used the border as a metaphor for Edge to Edge, and brought 12 Mexican artists to the U.S. for the first time. In another participating gallery (in Venice, CA) closed for during the outbreak, we’ll install 12 artists from Japan in a few days, then show the work virtually online. In 2021 (postponed from this coming May) 12 galleries in our building will be hosting an equal number of galleries or more from Berlin. What ideas do you have? How can we help? Space52 founded by the artist Dionisis Christofilogiannis in 2017 and supports Athens based artists and continuously seeks collaborations with art spaces and professionals from abroad. Our community and network grow by facilitating collaborations, exchanges and research-based project. Space52 serves as a hub for local and international creatives, intellectuals and theoreticians. Main focus of all our engagements is the current inquiries of our growing dynamic community. Space52 is the Athens incubator of ideas and experimentations.  

  The Foundry Art Centre is a dynamic community art center dedicated to the creation and presentation of contemporary visual arts. Our mission is to connect everyday people with the arts through our studio artists, educational classes, special events, and exhibitions. Featuring a state-of-the-art gallery space, the Foundry hosts national and international juried fine art exhibitions and curated traveling exhibitions.

  CAMERA is focused on promoting the work of emerging visual artists, especially photography-related, as well as installation art, new media, mixed media. The name CAMERA is referring both to the device used in photography, and to the latin meaning of the word camera – chamber, which the artist-run space actually resembles. The latin concepts of camera obscura and camera lucida are other important connections regarding the name of the artist-run space. CAMERA is the artist-run space of Irina Dumitrașcu Măgurean, Cluj-based visual artist.  

  Love’s Remedies is an initiative by artists BRD (Bridget Rosalia Driessen) and Hannah Kim Varamini. Started in 2018, Love’s Remedies uses the artists’ collective interest in care and attention as media, and invites other artists to utilize them and their resources for their own benefit. For their inhabitance at ArtCenter DTLA through 2020, Love’s Remedies continues to investigate the relations between friendship and artist networks, professional practices and expansive action.

During Soviet times, arts and culture were promoted, financed and used by the state and the communist party as an instrument to underpin the state, their party values and ideology. Cultural content had to align with ideological propaganda and be broadly understood by the general public. It also had to instill into people a feeling of being a part of the USSR family alongside its objectives and achievements. With the collapse of the Soviet Union and the concomitant economic dip and scarcity of state resources in the newly independent Kyrgyz Republic, the arts and culture community and Kyrgyz Union of Artists not only lost its financing but more importantly its role in society and the state. Twenty years after independence, like other newly independent states, the multi-ethnic Kyrgyz Republic is still struggling with a new national identity appealing to all constituent parts of the country.   The Concern Newsstand has such a name because of a concern that the world is falling to distracted mindlessness and that we’re all reading from physical, paper objects less and less. A ‘concern’ is also the name of a ‘business’. The Chapel Hill / Carrboro, NC area no longer has m/any used book or magazine stores. The Newsstand is offering this service to the community. It is also a venue for local artists & artists from beyond to sell their printed materials & limited edition products. Housed in a gallery & among artist studios, it is a meeting spot & hang out place. The curated focus is to expand one’s mind in some way beyond the mundane via artist books, comics, art books, magazines, small press publishers, used books, vintage magazines & more. Unit 1 Gallery | Workshop is Workshop Foundation’s exhibition and residency space in London. It supports a diverse range of emerging and mid-career contemporary artists by providing them with space and time to develop their practice, championing principles of integrity and rigour. Through its residency programmes and exhibitions, it gives artists, curators and theorists a platform to present work and share ideas as well as creating an environment for freethinking and exchange. The Foundation seeks to progress artists’ careers and connect them to the public. It has now organized more than 25 exhibitions with over 100 artists and curators. Unit 1 Gallery | Workshop was founded in 2015 by artist Stacie McCormick in a former builder’s merchant.

Founded in 1976, Touchstone Gallery is located in a custom-built street-level space at 901 New York Avenue NW, Washington, DC. Since the beginning, Touchstone’s mission has remained unaltered: to enrich the lives of the community through diverse contemporary art exhibitions; to promote a rich variety of art talent in the DC region; to showcase national and international artists whenever possible; and to foster continuing artistic and career growth of its 50 member artists through encouragement and support. The gallery is centrally located in Washington, DC, between the White House and the United States Capitol. Close to the CityCenterDC development, the Walter E. Washington Convention Center and the National Museum of Women in the Arts, this venue is easily accessible by public transportation and a perfect modern backdrop for contemporary art. One Stay, One Art PARADISE AIR is an artist-in-residence program located in Matsudo, Chiba Prefecture, conveniently close to yet comfortably removed from the bustle of central Tokyo. The program is held on the vacant floors of a former hotel, a setting afforded to us by the Rakuen pachinko parlor (a pinball-gambling establishment) that occupies the bottom floors of this building owned by Hamatomo Corporation. We launched the program in 2013, naming ourselves PARADISE AIR after this “Rakuen” – “paradise” in English – combined with “AIR,” the acronym for “artist-in-residence.” Artist-in-residence programs provide artists a place to stay and create art for a given period, supporting their travel and artistic activities. Situated along the old Mito Road, Matsudo thrived during the Edo Period (1603–1868) as one of the route’s “post towns”– stop-off points punctuating major roads – where travelers would stay on their journey between Edo (present-day Tokyo) and Mito. Countless travelers came and went past where Matsudo station stands today, including artists – poets, painters, calligraphers and the like – who would sometimes leave pieces of their own art as payment for lodging.   “Hlebzawod” art space was created on abandoned factory territory in the summer of 2016. Its mission is educational activity in contemporary art. Also combined with the formation of the exhibiting activity in Ukraine, promotion of contemporary art, as a necessity of modern retell of our cultural and historical content. It contains programs of familiarization of audience with the tendencies of Ukrainian contemporary art, and the disclosure of its social and cultural significance, formation of audience’s outlook and tastes, the search and help in growing of young talents.  

bi’bak (Turkish: have a look) is a non-profit organization and cultural space based in Berlin, with a focus on transnational narratives, migration, global mobility and their aesthetic dimensions. bi’bak’s programme examines diverse disciplines in art, academics, and community development, including film screenings, exhibitions, workshops as well as music events and culinary excursions. bi’bak is a non-profit organization founded in 2014 by the artists and curators Malve Lippmann and Can Sungu. The curated film programme, bi’bakino, as well as the audio programme bi’bakaudio aims to show transnational, postcolonial and postmigrant perspectives. Experts invited from the fields of art, film and academics will enable a more differentiated, explicitly non-European view of society and cultural history. bi’baxchange offers a platform for cultural actors, initiatives and projects and initiates cross-border collaborations. bi’bakwerk is interested in the development of innovative location-based mediation concepts, which aim at an equal participation and the exchange of ideas, knowledge and creativity. bi’bak’s research-based exhibitions focus on dimly-lit narratives in (Western) Europe in order to generate new perspectives that are crucial for a comprehensive understanding of socio-political and socio-economic contexts worldwide. bi’bak was awarded a project space by the Berlin Senate for Culture and Europe in 2017.

  Kunstverein Familie Montez e. V. is an official art association/artspace/collective which exhibits contemporary independent art, based in Frankfurt am Main. Founded in 2007 by Mirek Macke and Anja Czioska at the Städelhofes, the „Lola Montez“ , has had at times a nomadic existence, but always a fixture of the Frankfurt independent off space scene, it now resides (since 2014) under the Honsellbrücke, in two newly renovated arches of the bridge, directly on the River Main and Osthafen. Kunstverein Familie Montez organizes group and solo shows, talks, book presentations, performances, film screenings, summer schools and music events, and since summer 2018 houses a Hermann Nitsch Archive plus documentation of Contemporary Performance artists that have been invited to the Micro Residency programme.  

KuBa: kulturbahnhof is an independent non-profit art project. With our Artist in Residence program, we want to create a specific space for inspiration, dialogue and cooperation, open to the challenges of our time. KuBa: kulturbahnhof is located on the site of a former train station in the town of Klein Warnow (Brandenburg), on the Berlin-Hamburg railway. The residency program offers artists, writers and cultural scientists a place to work, create and experiment. The interaction with this unique location is an essential element of the project. The artistic directors of KuBa: kulturbahnhof are Sharon Horodi and Cheb Mika Kammerer. The two are artists, active in the field of video, photography, performance-art and creative writing.   Zaratan – Arte Contemporânea is a not-for-profit space and an organization founded by artists in Lisbon city center in November 2014. Zaratan is a creation, production and promotion structure for contemporary art and a space of reflection and listening. In order to stimulate creativity and contribute to generate valid cultural processes, Zaratan has developed so far a heterogeneous and mostly free of charge agenda of events, that parallel to the regular schedule of exhibitions, presents video-projections, concerts, talks by artists, presentations and performances. Zaratan defends an interdisciplinary attitude and aims to promote a deeper comprehension of the artistic languages of the present with an independent structure.  

WPA supports artist-driven projects, advocacy, and dialogue so that artists can live, work and flourish.  WPA invites artists to conceive of programs that showcase the work or ideas of other artists (or creative thinkers, scholars, activists, etc.) and then supports them with money, introductions/connections, idea-development, planning & production, communications, marketing and promotion. In our view, artist-driven programming combines the best of two existing models—“artist-run” and “artist-centered”. It is closer in intent to the former than the latter because artists are curating everything—exhibitions, performances, talks, workshops, screenings, platforms, etc. Yet it provides a degree of professional support and organizational stability that an “artist-run” organization might not.
