The ZK/U ZK/U seeks to develop projects, co-produce knowledge and share values created through exchanges. ZK/U does not offer a fixed set of ideas and principles for its fellows. Rather, individual projects and needs shape what could be described as a continuous formation. Instead of letting the ‘final product’ constrain the possible routes that a practice might take, ZK/U focuses on the processes that come from, and feed into, the particular contexts of the fellows’ practice, whether they be locally-defined situations or international discourses. THE ORGANIZATION BEHIND ZK/U: KUNSTREPUBLIK The ZK/U concept and practice were initiated by the artist collective and non-profit organization KUNSTrePUBLIK e.V.. The association managed to become the owner of the former railway depot and holds a 40 year lease on the ground. KUNSTrePUBLIK‘s concepts and projects are equally focused on local involvement and global exchange. Coming from non-institutional backgrounds, the founders aspire to continue exploring ways of collaborating, researching and creating, that go beyond the lines of existing structures and preconceptions.   Fluctuating images is an independent, non-commercial platform for media art and media design, established 2004 in Stuttgart, since 2008 in Berlin. The focus of its transdisciplinary curatorial and scientific approach are audiovisual productions (visualization of music) as well as developments in art, design, architecture, music, dance and film.  

  Exgirlfriend is a contemporary art exhibition space established by Elena Feijoo in Berlin-Steglitz in 2016. Since then, the gallery has moved its location to a 150 square meter hall within the larger HER arts building in Alt-Mariendorf. Exgirlfriend has been showcasing 7 innovative exhibitions by local and international emerging artists each year alongside a wide-ranging external programming schedule. At the end of each year, Exgirlfriend hosts an open call for which all project types and applicants are eligible. Exgirlfriend is in a constant state of flux determined by its changing cultural context as well as by everyone who has a relationship with the space—collaborators, artists, and audiences.

  Selected by Artslant Magazine as one of Berlin’s most interesting non-profit art spaces, SomoS finds meaning in a pragmatic innovative hybrid of art-presentation, production, education and reflection that engages with, and celebrates an ever-changing community; living and working together in a multi-generational, multi-cultural setting. Organizing an Artist-in-Residency program and an ambitious exhibition and event schedule, SomoS closely works with artists, organizers and curators to realize their projects. SomoS’ mission is to create an international open framework for innovative arts and creative cooperation.  

  OKK/Raum29 is an atelier, experimental- and exhibition space, a mediating platform for dialogue which offers a place for a diverse range of art works in the frame of an „expanded art term“. OKK is an artist-run platform for cultural activism based in Berlin, Germany. Rather than supporting single artistic careers, the initiative aims at providing a basic structure for artists and locals to join an open network of topic-specific activities. OKK has been home to various participative, collaborative and socially engaged projects – in its neighbourhood in Berlin, Wedding, as well as in other parts of Germany and abroad. Regularly, we invite artists and cultural workers from different genres to present their works in exhibitions and artistic events. The interdisciplinarity of the projects is important to us. The origins of artspring berlin The history of artspring berlin begins in 2017. Inspired by the desire to establish a district-wide weekend of open studios in Pankow, artspring berlin was brought into being. The main goal was to improve the visibility of artistic production and to locate work spaces for the interested audience. In a constantly growing district like Pankow, the studios and their artists are constantly threatened by gentrification and displacement. History & History The artspring berlin festival Since 2019, artspring berlin has been organizing an art festival in which more than 400 artists and cultural workers take part every year. For a whole month, both well-known and unexpected places in Pankow become a stage for a diverse cultural program. As a highlight, many artists open their doors to the public during the open studio days. Digital expansion In parallel to the physical festival, artspring berlin also has a growing digital presence. Palmas is an artist-run space that reflects and acts over contemporary practices in the field of visual arts. Understood as a space for artistic experimentation with a special focus on emerging artists, the idiosyncrasy of the project is reflected by the pink colour of the walls, which serves simultaneously as an initial challenge to the artists as well as a homogeneous identity that helps to present a singular exhibition programme in the national and international context. Established in 2017 in Lisbon (Portugal), at a time when there was a lack of independent spaces in the city’s art scene, the project had immediately an impressive local and national acceptance. By playing an active role in engaging with the local artistic community, a vibrant, heterogeneous and assiduous audience emerged, which helped to characterise the space as a special and important place in the city’s cultural landscape. Drogerie is located in Berliner Strasse 99, in the east of Braunschweig. It is an autonomous and independet platform which is mainly used as a studio for currently two artists. It also provides the opportunity for concerts, exhibitions, lectures, screenings and more.

Automat is an independently curated space for contemporary art and an open platform for exploratory discourse. Collaborations and spontaneous uses for knowledge transfer and cultural initiatives are as much part of the program as bringing together visual arts with other forms of expression. The Curatorial Collective for Public Art (CCPA) develops curatorial formats for the production, mediation and representation of art in public space, public art and urban interventions. As an agency for site-specific, transdisciplinary, critical and transitory public art, it approaches curatorial practice as a collective endeavor on the intersection of concept, organization and design. Through long-term collaborations and in reciprocal processes with artists, CCPA experiments with innovative curatorial frameworks for artworks in public space – be it a festival for urban interventions, an artistic funfair or an exhibition of ephemeral public art. Found in 2019 by Dominik Kuschmieder and Till Terschüren in a two-story 540sqm loft. After remodeling the space the house now offers 7 artists studios, a professional workshop and community spaces as well as a garden. The whole space is dedicated to art production and acts as a base and gathering point for graduates of the HBK Braunschweig.

We are a creative and political collective that has grown out of the solidarity and sister*hood – and the difficulties – we have experienced in the industry. We want to destigmatise stripping and sex work as a whole, to start a dialogue about sex work in which people can learn about our work and lives, and, last but not least, to share the art of stripping. The sex industry presents many problems. Our collective want to provide a space where strippers’ voices can be heard and where we can share our love for sensual movement without being at the mercy of strip club rules and discrimination. We are advocates of the decriminalization of sex work globally. We condemn gender and racial discrimination in the sex industry. We want to challenge oppressive structures. We, the BSC, bring you original performance, pole skills, and sheer sexuality on a silver platter, with a political edge. Forget everything you thought you knew about strippers.

BERLIN-WEEEKLY was founded in June 2010 as an art project space by Stefanie Seidl. The 4,5, meter high room is a double-glazed former gateway for horse-drawn carriages in the historic Jewish Scheunenviertel in Berlin Mitte. The showcase space, which is illuminated until late at night, can be regarded as a kind of public stage on which the artists can stage an installation, representative of their work. The potential of the public showcase is to reach a wide, diverse audience. As a result of its one-sided orientation to the street BERLIN-WEEEKLY thus functions as an artistic intervention in public space. The exhibitions do not change weekly (as the name suggests and was initially planned), but every month. Though the installations are clearly visible from the outside until late at night, the room itself is always closed except for the regular openings and for special events and presentations. HIER & JETZT: Connections is an exchange and residency program for artists in exile. The initiative was launched in 2017 by artists of B.L.O. Ateliers in Berlin-Lichtenberg. We collaborate and exchange ideas on a collegial and informal basis and thus create a platform for art, learning and communication. We define exile as the involuntary loss of one’s social context and working environment in the country of origin for an uncertain period of time. Our structure supports the arrival and artistic production of those who recently came to Berlin. With help of our cross-cultural network we organize workshops, artist talks, film screenings, open studios and exhibitions – and sometimes we just have a coffee on the premises of B.L.O. Ateliers. We invite experts and the public to share new social footholds and artistic incentives with people from, among others, Syria, Iran, Iraq and Turkey. bi’bak (Turkish: have a look) is a non-profit organization and cultural space based in Berlin, with a focus on transnational narratives, migration, global mobility and their aesthetic dimensions. bi’bak’s programme examines diverse disciplines in art, academics, and community development, including film screenings, exhibitions, workshops as well as music events and culinary excursions. bi’bak is a non-profit organization founded in 2014 by the artists and curators Malve Lippmann and Can Sungu. The curated film programme, bi’bakino, as well as the audio programme bi’bakaudio aims to show transnational, postcolonial and postmigrant perspectives. Experts invited from the fields of art, film and academics will enable a more differentiated, explicitly non-European view of society and cultural history. bi’baxchange offers a platform for cultural actors, initiatives and projects and initiates cross-border collaborations. bi’bakwerk is interested in the development of innovative location-based mediation concepts, which aim at an equal participation and the exchange of ideas, knowledge and creativity. bi’bak’s research-based exhibitions focus on dimly-lit narratives in (Western) Europe in order to generate new perspectives that are crucial for a comprehensive understanding of socio-political and socio-economic contexts worldwide. bi’bak was awarded a project space by the Berlin Senate for Culture and Europe in 2017.

  Kunstverein Familie Montez e. V. is an official art association/artspace/collective which exhibits contemporary independent art, based in Frankfurt am Main. Founded in 2007 by Mirek Macke and Anja Czioska at the Städelhofes, the „Lola Montez“ , has had at times a nomadic existence, but always a fixture of the Frankfurt independent off space scene, it now resides (since 2014) under the Honsellbrücke, in two newly renovated arches of the bridge, directly on the River Main and Osthafen. Kunstverein Familie Montez organizes group and solo shows, talks, book presentations, performances, film screenings, summer schools and music events, and since summer 2018 houses a Hermann Nitsch Archive plus documentation of Contemporary Performance artists that have been invited to the Micro Residency programme.

KuBa: kulturbahnhof is an independent non-profit art project. With our Artist in Residence program, we want to create a specific space for inspiration, dialogue and cooperation, open to the challenges of our time. KuBa: kulturbahnhof is located on the site of a former train station in the town of Klein Warnow (Brandenburg), on the Berlin-Hamburg railway. The residency program offers artists, writers and cultural scientists a place to work, create and experiment. The interaction with this unique location is an essential element of the project. The artistic directors of KuBa: kulturbahnhof are Sharon Horodi and Cheb Mika Kammerer. The two are artists, active in the field of video, photography, performance-art and creative writing.
